USCIS Updates Policy Manual: New Customer Service Options for Form I-589 and I-881 Applicants

On January 7, 2025, USCIS issued updated guidance in its Policy Manual, streamlining customer service options for applicants filing Form I-589 (Application for Asylum and Withholding of Removal) and Form I-881 (Application for Suspension of Deportation or Special Rule Cancellation of Removal under NACARA). This update also extends to individuals undergoing credible fear, reasonable fear, and Safe Third Country Agreement screening processes.

The revised guidance emphasizes confidentiality and outlines procedures USCIS Contact Center personnel must follow when handling inquiries. Representatives and applicants must verify their identity before receiving case-specific information. Additionally, the Contact Center can direct individuals to useful resources like USCIS online accounts, Case Status Online, and the Asylum Office Locator.

Form I-589 allows noncitizens present in the U.S. to seek asylum or withholding of removal, provided they are not in immigration proceedings or are unaccompanied minors. Form I-881 assists those eligible under NACARA to apply for deportation relief.

Effective immediately, these updates aim to enhance clarity and accessibility for applicants and their representatives. For more information, visit the USCIS Policy Manual Feedback page or explore USCIS online tools to manage your case efficiently.
