State Department to Launch Pilot Program for Domestic Visa Renewals

The US State Department is planning to launch a pilot program that would allow H-1B specialty occupation workers and other temporary visa holders to renew their visas in the US. Currently, these workers are required to travel abroad to renew their visas, which can be a challenge, especially during the pandemic. The domestic renewal option will reduce the workload of consular offices abroad and benefit both workers and employers. The State Department will start with H and L visa holders and could eventually expand the program to include other visas. The domestic processing option does not require new regulations, but it involves setting up a new consular division in Washington, DC.
