USCIS Enhances Voter Verification Systems

On this Election Day, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has announced new enhancements to its Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE) program — an important step toward safeguarding the integrity of America’s elections.

The upgrades allow states to verify citizenship using the last four digits of a registrant’s Social Security number instead of the full number. This improvement streamlines the verification process while ensuring that only U.S. citizens are eligible to vote in federal elections.

According to USCIS, these updates have already enabled over 205 million verification queries as of October 2025 — a significant increase from 25 million in 2024. The initiative reinforces the principle that American elections are reserved exclusively for American citizens.

Currently, 26 states have implemented or are establishing agreements to use SAVE for voter verification. USCIS continues to encourage more states to participate to enhance voter confidence and election security nationwide.
