Foreign nationals in Canada who apply to extend or change the conditions of their work permit before expiration may continue working under maintained status while IRCC processes the new application. IRCC has now confirmed that eligible online applicants automatically receive a WP-EXT except PGWP letter with a 365-day validity period, helping workers provide clearer proof of continued work authorization to employers, provincial health insurance providers, payroll departments, and other agencies. This update is especially important for temporary foreign workers who need ongoing evidence of legal work authorization while waiting for a decision on their extension application. The new guidance also clarifies that the expiry date listed on the WP-EXT letter does not necessarily end the worker’s authorization to continue working if the application remains pending.
