ABA Issues Alert Regarding Fraudulent Immigration Law Practices

For Immediate Release

Ridgewood, N.J. — August 27, 2025 — The American Bar Association (ABA) has issued an alert to the public regarding a sharp increase in the number of individuals fraudulently posing as immigration attorneys. In many cases, these individuals falsely claim affiliation with reputable legal services organizations, including the ABA, or assert that they have special relationships with government officials.

Fraudsters are using sophisticated technology to impersonate licensed attorneys, forge government documents, and misuse trusted organizations’ branding. Victims often pay thousands of dollars for services that are never delivered, while suffering irreparable harm to their immigration cases.

The ABA alert underscores the real dangers of unauthorized practice of immigration law (UPIL). These scams drain immigrants’ financial resources and can leave individuals vulnerable to detention or removal.

Protect Yourself from Immigration Fraud

  • Verify credentials with the state bar.
  • Avoid unsolicited contact through WhatsApp or social media.
  • Keep copies of all contracts, applications, and receipts — and never surrender original documents.
  • Seek a second opinion if an offer seems too good to be true.
  • Use trusted directories such as the Immigration Advocates Network and the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA).

“Bad actors are exploiting immigrant communities during stressful times,” said David Nachman, Esq., Managing Attorney at NPZ Law Group. “We strongly encourage individuals to work only with licensed immigration attorneys. Verifying credentials before engaging representation is the best defense against these scams.”
