USCIS Announces New Form I-485: Key Updates and Deadlines

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has released a new edition of Form I-485, Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status (edition date 10/24/24). Starting February 10, 2025, only this new edition of Form I-485 will be accepted. Older editions will be rejected.

Here’s what you need to know about the updated Form I-485:

  • Simplified Submission Process:
    • The new form incorporates the exemption request for Form I-864, Affidavit of Support Under Section 213A of the INA, directly into Form I-485.
    • Form I-864W, Request for Exemption for Intending Immigrant’s Affidavit of Support, has been discontinued.
  • Streamlined Information Collection:
    • Questions on the form now require applicants to identify their immigrant category, helping USCIS determine exemptions from the public charge ground of inadmissibility more efficiently.
  • Revised Medical Examination Requirements:
    • Certain applicants must submit Form I-693, Report of Immigration Medical Examination and Vaccination Record, or a partial Form I-693 (e.g., vaccination record) with their Form I-485. Failure to include the required Form I-693 may result in rejection of the application.

These updates are part of USCIS’s initiative to reduce burdens and improve clarity for applicants seeking immigration benefits and services.
