OPEN WP EXTENDED FOR HONG KONG RESIDENTS

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced to extend and expand open work permit for eligible Hong Kong residents, a Public Policy in force since June 2020. These measures align with Canada’s Indo-Pacific strategy, strengthening economic growth and resilience. The Policy also aims to attract educated Hong Kong youth to Canada, where it is expected that their human capital and international experience will contribute to Canada’s economic, social and cultural fabric.

The Public Policy to apply for open work permit is now extended up to February 7, 2025. The eligibility requirements of the program are also updated. The Hong Kong residents who have graduated within last 10 years from a post-secondary learning institution are eligible to apply for open work permit for up to three years. The eligible family members may also be issued an open work permit or a study permit. The applicants can be residing in Canada or abroad.

The temporary Public Policy also create pathways for permanent residence, thereby encouraging Hong Kong residents to choose Canada as a place to study, work and settle.
