米国で永住することは多くの人の願いでもあります。最初のステップの1つとして、まず合法的に永住者になることです。 このステータスを得た人はグリーンカードが発行されるため、一般的にグリーンカード保有者（Green Card Holders）と呼ばれます。 彼らは、犯罪と見なされる違反で有罪判決を受けない限り、無期限に米国に滞在することが許可されています。 最終的に米国市民権を申請することも許可されています。
