Canada has become a destination of choice for international students. This is attributed to strong schools and programs of study in both English and French; welcoming and diverse communities with an enviable quality of life; and opportunities to start careers. Eventually, these students become ideal candidates for permanent residency with their Canadian education, in-demand labor skills, and proficiency in one of the official languages.
Canadian government and Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (“IRCC”) policies together support international students tremendously. In response to Covid-19, international students with an approved study permit, on or before March 19th, are exempted to travel to Canada. IRCC also clarified that with in-class courses moving online-only format, students will still be eligible for the Post-Graduation Work Permit Program. Students already in Canada with an authorization to work, can work up to 20 hours per week during an academic session and full time during scheduled breaks in the academic year.
Further, effective up to August 21st, 2020, International students providing essential services can work more then 20 hours if they are holding study permit in an academic session and are eligible to work off campus.
International students are also entitled to obtain $500 a week for up to 16 weeks under the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (retrospectively available from March 15th to October 3rd), after meeting certain criteria.
IRCC will provide further updates in coming weeks reflecting changes with the designated learning institutions during September intake semester.
